Highlight of the Day: AGMM and Board Elections

AFRINIC Members and community observers gathered on 9th June at 14:00 for the AFRINIC Annual General Members' Meeting.

Elections for the open seats on the Board of Directors took place. The following candidates were elected by the Members:

  • Sunday Folayan / Western Africa region
  • Hytham El Nakhal / Northern Africa region
  • Seun Ojedeji / Non geographical region

The AGMM proceedings included: 

  • An outline of the board activities for 2015 and the first half of 2016, focusing on the achievements including the recruitment of Alan Barrett as CEO and change in budget assumptions: the budget is now based on Activities’ key requirements and needs as well as availability of funds.
  • Alan Barrett provided the AFRINIC Activities Update followed by presentations on AFRINIC finances and budget for 2016. Highlights included: 150 new members joined AFRINIC in 2015, AFRINIC is expected to meet its budget for 2015/16, expenses across all key areas had decreased during 2015 and the AFRINIC Board was looking at other revenue sources to ensure sustained growth in membership in light of the potential effects that IPv4 exhaustion will have.
  • With regards to the last point, the Board offered further clarification on extra revenue sources they are discussing, which include: how to monetise products being developed by AFRINIC’s innovation and research teams and expanding AFRINIC’s capacity building efforts by looking at way to monetise trainings in a consultancy manner for those who are not members.

AIS'16 Plenary - AFRINIC-24 Plenary

Thursday started with the plenary sessions and updates from the four other RIRs - APNIC (Vivek Nigam), ARIN (Kevin Blumberg), LACNIC (Oscar Robles), RIPE NCC Marco Schmidt). This was followed by the IANA Update (Elise Gerich) and the ASO Update (Mark Elkins). After the morning break, the community came back together for the Panel Session on the IANA Stewardship Transition. The Panel consisted of:

  • Elise Gerich
  • Pierre Dandjinou
  • Raul Echeberria
  • Fiona Asonga
  • Alan Barrett

 The panel discussed the status of the ongoing IANA oversight transition.

ASO-AC / NRO-AC Elections

Elections for the AFRINIC region's representatives on the ASO-AC / NRO-NC took place during the second session of the day. Omo Oaiya was the successful candidate. 

FIRE Africa Workshop Concluded

The three-day FIRE Africa Workshop concluded today. Around 30 participants attended the workshop to develop their project management skills among which the FIRE programme funded. 

Mwendwa Kivuva, FIRE programme Manager says: 

The Fund for Internet Research and Education (FIRE) Capacity building workshop was a success for its participants in terms of knowledge gain.The enthusiasm the participants manifested during the sessions is an encouragement to AFRINIC to continue promoting Internet growth in the continent, by continuously identifying the gaps that exist, and sealing them. The mission of  AFRINIC is to support Internet technology usage and development across the continent. 

Gala Dinner

Over 300 attendees joined the fun at Thursday night's Gala Dinner. Singing and dancing accompanied the festivities. The Gala Dinner was generously sponsored by ITPT Networks and LARUS.
